Annual Pre-Contest Festival – Friday 27th October 2006

The band’s Contest Weekend 2006 was highly significant for a number of reasons: this was the 60th anniversary of the band’s involvement; the first under the full leadership of Bandmaster Andrew Blyth; another successful collaboration with Steve Sykes and Brian Turner; a change of venue and date. However, more significant than any of these features was the commissioning of six new band members from the young peoples’ band.

New band members commissioned

Taking part for the first time were (from left) Alexander Price, Josh Byfield, James Shepherd, Simon Hicks, Ben Horton and Adam Whitehead who were commissioned as band members the following Sunday. All have strong family connections with the band. Josh is the son of Songster Leader Jon Byfield, Simon is the grandson of Peter Moore, Ben, Alexander and Adam are the sons of Stuart Horton, André Price and Graham Whitehead respectively. James is the son of former member Carl Shepherd.

The band was on top form under the new bandmaster and Steve Sykes showed once again his phonomenal talent as a musician and as an entertainer. Brian Turner CBE compèred the programme for the third successive year and even took up the tuba himself for a short interlude in duet with Steve.
