The Band, with the support of the Songsters presented its annual Spring Festival on Saturday 9 April in St Peters church Arkley. Despite difficult road conditions in the surrounding area, the programme was presented to a packed church audience. The full programme is available to download here. We were grateful to the church and Revd. Tristan Chapman, seen here with Bandmaster Jonathan Corry, for the invitation.
The songsters provided two song sets under the leadership of their newly commissioned leader Andrew Lofthouse. Andrew later took the audience up into the stratosphere with his Trumpet solo Onward Christian Soldiers. Other solo items were presented by Deputy Bandmaster Andrew Justice who seduced us with Blessed Assurance, Band Sargent Maurice Patterson who blessed us with Elgar’s Ave Verum and Garry Ambrose who delighted us with Saint-Saens The Elephant.
The programme also included a first performance of an arrangement by Bandmaster Jonathan Corry of As the Bridegroom to his Chosen (John Rutter). The programme concluded with a Ray Farr’s rousing arrangement of JS Bach’s Toccata in D minor.
It was in 1962 that Bandmaster James Williams, who was in the audience, first introduced The Red Shield as a programme extra. That tradition is and was maintained.
